Blog #4

Now that the semester has ended and I look back I feel that the overall structure of the class was not clearly organized. Topics being discussed one lecture would then be brought up again after it had appeared we were done with it. At times it felt there was no correlation between one lectures to the next, as if we just jumped to a whole other subject. This was a problem for me personally because I felt I had to change my whole frame of mind in order to focus on the new subject matter.

I felt the class offered a lot of information, possibly more than should be required for just one class. However, it was useful information that could be applied to other fields in media. This will make future classes easier to comprehend.

I found the blog writings to be the most prolific aspect of this class. I would’ve liked to have had more blog assignments. I believe that when an individual learns something new, writing about it and repeating it to others (in their own words) is helpful towards retaining the information long term.

Ultimately I have learned a lot from this class and it has encouraged me gain further interest in web design and photography. I am glad I took this class as it has helped me discover an interest in a subject I have overlooked.

Design encourages our attention, focuses our desires and helps shape our social world. With advertisements design is essential to facilitate the portrayal of a message and the marketing a product or service.

I came across a Perrier advertisement that I found interesting, what appealed to me the most is that in its composition the design creates a sort of three-dimensional image which gives life to an inanimate object.

The background is not in focus —although visibility of the background is still required to establish a theme for this advertisement— only the man, his t-shirt and the Perrier bottle are in focus which makes them the core of the advertisement.

The contrasting colors of the man’s blue t-shirt and the image on the shirt functions to highlight the karate kid on the shirt, making it appear detached from the shirt, giving it its own entity.

I believe the interactivity between the shirt design and an actual Perrier bottle is referencing the sparkle in the water, the carbonation adds a “kick” to natural water —anyone or anything can’t resist drinking it.

Overall the advertisements design increases ones desire to quench their thirst. It also emphasizes the idea that water does a body good and that in order to stay healthy and in shape drinking plenty of water is necessary; Perrier water that is.

Perrier is a caffeine-free, sparkling natural mineral water, there is nothing artificial about it and this advertisement does an excellent job of declaring so through its simplistic yet creative design.
